B. 1962, Japan
Born in Osaka and graduating from a school for children with intellectual disabilities, Matsumoto has been a Kabuki fan since childhood, often visiting the theatre with his grandparents. His interest lies in entertainment with unique aesthetics such as Kabuki, Bunraku puppet show, tea ceremony, Disneyland, and the Johnnie’s boys band, and he devotes himself to collecting information on these topics. As he gazes at the characters in the collected printed material including catalogues, brochures and leaflets, then copying them repeatedly, the characters transform to increase their poetic power. Writing characters is a magical act that connects Matsumoto with the virtual world he loves.
Matsumoto's work has been exhibited internationally, including at the Collection de l'Art Brut (Lausanne, 2004), Circulo de Bellas Artes (Madrid, 2006), Kunsthaus (Vienna, 2009), la maison rouge (Paris, 2014), and Centre d’Art Contemporain Geneve (2020). His work has been collected by Collection de l’Art Brut (Lausanne), the Museum of Everything (London), and collection abcd / Bruno Decharme (Paris).
